Between October 17 and 18, 2026, model trackers spotted three unfamiliar IDs — aurora-red-alpha, aurora-green-alpha and aurora-blue-alpha — in OpenAI's API model list. They were removed within hours. Later that day, the same names surfaced inside Arena's anonymous image battles, where testers were already generating pictures with them.

Most observers believe these are alpha builds of OpenAI's next image model — possibly what will ship as GPT-Image-3. None of it is officially confirmed.

While you wait to see what Aurora becomes, your photos don't have to wait: turn them into colored-pencil illustrations, right here.

What actually leaked

On October 17, three model IDs — aurora-red-alpha, aurora-green-alpha, aurora-blue-alpha — were created in OpenAI's API within about two minutes of each other and briefly appeared in the model list. Outside trackers captured diff-style screenshots before the entries were pulled, roughly four hours later. Calls made while the IDs were visible returned "no available capacity" (503) or 404 errors — the entries existed, but weren't serving traffic. OpenAI's public model pages never listed them, and OpenAI has made no statement.

What testers saw in Arena

On October 18, testers including LuminaBench reported meeting the Aurora models inside Arena's anonymous image battles. Shared outputs include cat portraits attributed to aurora-red-alpha and aurora-green-alpha. Early impressions — from a handful of samples, not benchmarks: red tends to run faster; green runs slower but its results look closer to candid, natural photos, with color handling described as stronger than gpt-image-2.5-flare. No confirmed aurora-blue-alpha output has surfaced.

What Aurora probably is

The shared prefix and color suffixes suggest one model family — three alpha checkpoints or configurations of the same upcoming release, possibly tiered by speed and quality. Community trackers, including TestingCatalog and LuminaBench, suspect this is the next GPT Image model (GPT-Image-3). That remains a guess: there is no official name, no documentation, no pricing and no release date.

Can you use Aurora right now?

Not by choice. The API IDs no longer respond, and there is no official way to select the models. The only sightings are inside Arena's anonymous battles, where matchups are assigned at random — you can run image prompts there and hope an Aurora alpha lands in your pairing, but there is no opt-in.

Meanwhile, make something today

Whatever the aurora image generator ships as, it isn't usable today — but photo-to-art conversion is. PencilDays turns a photo you love into a colored-pencil, crayon or pastel illustration: upload one photo, pick a style, and download your artwork. One credit per illustration, no prompt writing needed, no sign-up required. People, pets, couples, everyday moments — the stuff worth drawing.

Make a keepsake

How PencilDays is different

General image models generate pictures from text prompts. PencilDays does something narrower and more personal: it uses your photo as the reference and generates a new stylized illustration from it — likeness, details and composition may vary. The result is a keepsake-style piece of art, made from a moment that's actually yours.

How it works

  1. Upload a photo

Choose one photo you have the right to use — JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB.

  2. Generate the illustration

Confirm the consent box and generate. Each illustration uses 1 credit.

  3. Download within 7 days

Your artwork appears when the job completes and stays available for 7 days.

Questions

Is OpenAI Aurora officially released?

No. As of October 19, 2026, Aurora is an unconfirmed leak — three model IDs appeared briefly in OpenAI's API and in Arena image tests. OpenAI has not announced, documented or priced them.

What are aurora-red, aurora-green and aurora-blue?

Three model IDs sharing the "aurora" prefix, believed to be alpha variants of one upcoming image model — possibly speed/quality tiers of the same release. Only red and green have produced shared test images so far.

Can I try Aurora right now?

Not directly. The only confirmed sightings are inside Arena's anonymous image battles, where models are assigned randomly — there's no opt-in or API access.

Is Aurora the same as GPT-Image-3?

Unconfirmed. Community trackers suspect the "aurora ai" trio are alpha builds of the next GPT Image model, based on the naming pattern and Arena image outputs. OpenAI has not commented.

What can I use instead right now?

For stylized photo art, PencilDays works today: upload a photo and get a colored-pencil, crayon or pastel illustration. It uses your photo as a reference — details and likeness may vary. One credit per illustration, no sign-up needed.
